An air purifier is a great appliance every household should invest in, especially if you have pets, breathing sensitivities, allergies, or are concerned about the quality of the air around you.

There are many air purifiers to choose from, however, to improve the quality of air that you breathe you need to invest in an air purifier that is excellent at removing pet hair, dander, dust, and other tiny air pollutants from your home.

In this article, we’re going to take a look at the 5 best air purifiers for a household with pets. And, even though the air purifier you’ll pick depends a lot on the size of your room, I’ll give you some useful tips that will help you make the best choice.

Let’s start with the…

7 things to consider when choosing an air purifier for a household with pets.

Choosing an air purifier for your home to help remove pet hair, mold, and odor from the air or control allergies is easy. Here’s what you need to know so you can pick the best air purifier for your home:

1. Portable vs. permanent installation?

What do you want out of your air purifier? Do you want it to filter hair, mold, odors, and allergy-causing impurities from your entire house, or is there a particular room that you have such as the bedroom or sitting room?

If you want an air purifier that you can move around as you like, then a portable unit is the right choice to make.

2. Size and filtration power matter.

Air purifiers come in different sizes, however, it is not just the size of the air purifier that you need to consider.

The size of the room, the number of pets that you have, how much dander and hair the pets give off, and the severity of the allergies, if any, that your family members experience should also be taken into account.

Most air purifiers are only effective for certain sized rooms. You will really feel the filtration power of the air purifier when the size of the room is slightly smaller than what it was rated for. i.e. an air purifier that’s designed for a 444 sq room will filter faster in a 333 sq room.

3. Filtration technology.

There are air purifiers for different sizes and types of particles. Pet hair, dander, and dust mites have a larger size compared to the smaller and finer particles of pollen, dust, smoke, and microorganisms.

If, for instance, you are allergic to pet hair and dander, then your filtration need will be less than if you were allergic to pollen.

For fine particles such as pollen, smoke, and dust, you need an air purifier that uses carbon filters and High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filtering technology to help trap large, medium, and small particles floating in the air.

4. Noise level.

Some people may love the white-noise hum typical of air purifiers, whereas others may be annoyed by it.

One good thing about using an air purifier to remove unwanted particles from the air is that you can adjust the distance between you and the unit as you see fit.

With this option, you can choose to position your air purifier far away from where you are if the hum grates on your nerves.

Thankfully the best air purifying systems are super-quiet irrespective of the filtering speed.

5. Ratings and certs.

The air-cleaning efficiency of portable air purifiers is measured based on their Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) while that of permanent HVAC systems is measured in Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV).

These ratings take into account the size of the room you can use the unit and the size of the particles it can remove from the air.

For efficient cleaning of the air in your home with a portable air purifier, you’ll need a unit that has a higher CADR, especially for large rooms.

For instance,

For example, look for a CADR of 130 if your room is 200 square feet or one with a 325 rating for a 500-square-foot room. Here’s how CADR is calculated.

When choosing an air purifier to deal with mold, dander, and other tiny particles floating in the air in your home, make sure to choose a unit that is certified safe for use.

Some poorly-made air purifiers may start a fire while you’re out of the house or give off offensive odors which may be harmful to your lungs and pets.

6. Cost.

When thinking of “cost,” do not just look at the price tag on the product.

Some air purifiers are cheap, but the filters are costlier to replace. And others are pricey, but the filters.

Another thing you should consider when calculating cost is how often the filters need to be replaced. That being said, the replacement interval will depend on the season and the number of pollutants floating in your air.

8. Ease of cleaning.

Choosing the best air purifier to remove pet dander, hair, dust, and other pollutants from the air in your home is a great investment to make.

However, there is no work done if your air purifying unit is not cleaned regularly – you’re just circulating the pollutants.

The 5 Best Air Purifiers for pet owners.

1. LEVOIT Air Purifier for Home.

The first air purifier on our list for cleaning the air is the LEVOIT Air Purifier for Home.

This portable air purifier quickly pulls dust, mold, odors, pollen, dander, and other allergies-causing debris out of the air in 129 sq. ft. room 4 times per hour, ensuring that you breathe quality air all the time it is running.

Great choice for households with multiple pets that shed a lot of hair or produce too much dander and odors.

What I like about the LEVOIT Air Purifier for Home is its portable and compact design. It’s not super large, so you will have no issues finding a suitable spot for it in your room. Or, if you like, you can simply move it to a clean surface as you switch between rooms.

Replacing the filters is just as smooth and easy as assembling the unit.

This air purifier has a bright night light that can help you navigate your room at night without reaching for the light switch on the wall. However, if lights off are a must-have for you to sleep soundly you can simply turn off the night light.

Is it noisy?

Not at all!

The LEVOIT Air Purifier for Home has 3 speed settings. The low and medium speed settings are super-quiet, low-level hum. But the third might be a bit loud for sensitive ears.

2. Coway Airmega 400 Smart Air Purifier.

Is your immune system struggling to deal with the pet hair and dander, asthma, dust, or other impurities floating around in the air in your home? Then you need to invest in a superior air purifier like the Coway Airmega 400 Smart Air Purifier.

First off, this unit is large (14.8” L x 22.91” W x 14.8” H). Make sure that you have a large enough space where it won’t be disturbed or obstructed – more so on the right, left, and top of the air purifier.

That’s because the Coway Airmega 400 Smart Air Purifier has air vents on the left and right side of the unit to pull in unclean air (meaning increased air intake and faster cleaning of the air in the room) and pushes the purified air out through another vent on the top of the unit. And it can clean the air in a 1,560 sq. ft. room twice within an hour

It has a light and particle sensor which, combined with its smart, automatic feature, helps the unit to adjust according to the number of impurities detected in the air.

This is great because instead of running at full speed irrespective of the amount of dust, hair, dander, pollen, and other pollutants in the air, the Coway Airmega 400 Smart Air Purifier removes the bulk of them, then slows down to avoid wasting energy.

A major concern with a unit this large and effective at removing pollutants from the air is the cost of replacement filters.

While you might not need to change them more often than 2 or 3 times a year, how often you do so depends on how much pollutants are in your home.

And, unlike other air purifiers that work one moment and the next moment it is flashing red. The Coway Airmega 400 Smart Air Purifier has a light indicator that will notify you weeks ahead of time that the filter needs to be changed so you can plan and order for it.

That being said, would you rather feel miserable while taking cold and allergy meds regularly or invest in a unit that saves you the misery at the cost of replacement filters?

3. Germ Guardian True HEPA Filter Air Purifier.

The Germ Guardian HEPA Filter Air Purifier is another air purifier that’s great at clearing up the air pollutants responsible for pet allergies and asthma. However, it is best suited for rooms under 160 sq. ft. large.

It features 3 different types of filters: a pre-filter to remove large particles from the air such as pet dander and hair; a charcoal filter for filtering smaller particles such as pollen, dust, and mold; and, finally, a HEPA filter to thoroughly clean the air of microscopic particles.

The Germ Guardian HEPA Filter Air Purifier has a UV-C light to kill airborne germs and viruses, but the design of the air purifier doesn’t make it very effective, so that doesn’t count as a feature to me.

Cleaning the pre-filter is super easy – all you have to do is open the front cover and vacuum in the direction of the air intake and it’s as good as new.

You will be shocked by the amount of dust, pollen, pet hair, and dander that the Germ Guardian HEPA Filter Air Purifier removes from the air when you go to clean the pre-filter, especially if you often discover dust and fine particles on furniture soon after cleaning them.

It’s easy to turn on and off or change speed level. However, the admirable thing about the Germ Guardian HEPA Filter Air Purifier is that you can close your eyes and sleep at night without the hum disturbing your night rest.

To get the best of this air purifier, or any air purifier for that matter, I recommend running it with the windows closed. This way the wind doesn’t introduce fresh pollen and dust into the already cleaned area.

While their customer service isn’t the worst out there, they still have room for improvement.

4. Winix 5500-2 Air Purifier.

Need a large, powerful, yet portable air purifier that you can move from one room to another? Then the Winix 5500-2 Air Purifier might be just what you’re looking for.

It’s super easy to set up and run in 5 minutes or less and is best suited for rooms no larger than 360 sq. ft. which is great for removing pollen, dander, and pet hair from the air as quickly as possible as well as controlling smoke and dust in small- to medium-sized rooms.

The Winix 5500-2 Air Purifier has a powerful and quiet fan with a 4-speed setting and an auto mode that pushes out a good amount of air.

You can easily open the front panel to remove and clean the pre-filter weekly or bi-weekly. How often you do this depends on the quality of air in your vicinity.

And, since the pre-filter, carbon filter, and HEPA filter of the Winix 5500-2 Air Purifier have a large surface area, you’re surely getting the best air-purifying value from them before they need replacement. The best part is that the filters do not cost an arm or a leg to replace.

The Winix 5500-2 Air Purifier also features a Plasma Wave Technology that creates Hydroxyls to neutralize bacteria and viruses without producing harmful ozone. Many people are rightly concerned that the Plasma Wave Technology in this air purifier produces harmful amounts of Ozone, but according to the California Air Resources Board (CARB) it has been tested and is well within the recommended minimum (0.050 ppm of ozone).

Well, you can turn it off if you want to!

5. Bissell air320 Smart Air Purifier.

Last but not least is the Bissell air320 Smart Air Purifier. It has a CADR of 199 for rooms up to 308 sq. ft. and can clean the air in a 1000 sq. ft. room once every hour

This air purifier removes pet hair, dander, odor, smoke, dust, pollen, and other pollutants from the air with so much ease that you might not even know it is running most times except for the display light.

The Bissell air320 Smart Air Purifier has 4 speed settings and an auto mode you can choose from to maintain the quality of air in your home. Plus, an LED light to quickly read the air quality at a glance – perfect for knowing when the system detects pollutants in the air.

I like that it is eye-catchy and is designed to pull in air from the front and push out a good amount of clean, filtered air through the vent on top. And with the sturdy, raised legs you can simply place the air purifier on the floor and close to the wall without blocking any vent or feeding it dust directly from the carpet.

Cleaning or replacing the air filter in the Bissell air320 Smart Air Purifier is one smooth and easy process. Everything simply snaps in place without much force, unscrewing or fiddling with the unit.

Bissell stands behind their products, offering a 5-year limited (no accidental damage) warranty once you register the device on Bissell’s official website.

Which Air Purifier is the Best Choice for Your Household?

As I said in the beginning, the air purifier that you invest in to help clean the air in your house will depend on the specifications of your home and your preference.

If you live in an area that gets more than a fair share of air pollutants, then I recommend you invest in Coway Airmega 400 Smart Air Purifier or Bissell air320 Smart Air Purifier.

They have powerful fan-speed settings and, although they are best suited for filtering the air in large rooms, you can use get the best out of them on the low or medium fan speed. This will ensure they clean the air of pollutants but with very little noise.

LEVOIT Air Purifier for Home is great for cleaning air pollutants in a 129 sq. ft. room and can change the air 4 times within an hour. That means, it can filter a 258 sq. ft. room in 2 hours without you having to crank the speed to the highest setting. But, you must not place it on the floor or carpet since it sucks air in through the bottom.

If you need an air purifier that you can keep close to your bed at night without the hum interfering with the quality of your sleep, then I recommend Germ Guardian HEPA Filter Air Purifier.

Unfortunately, since it is designed to push the purified air out through the back, placing it close to the wall will reduce its efficiency, unlike Bissell air320 Smart Air Purifier.

If you need an air purifier that you can move around as you wish, then Winix 5500-2 Air Purifier might be your best investment. It works insanely well for rooms that are within 360 sq. ft. or less, collecting pet hair, dander, dust, pollens, microorganisms, and other air pollutants like a real champ!

A little tip that will help you: if you want an air purifier to filter the air pollutants in, say, a 150 sq. ft. room don’t just reach for an air filter like the Germ Guardian HEPA Filter Air Purifier that is recommended for 160 sq. ft. room or less.

That’s because you will need to run it at medium- to high-fan speed most times for it to quickly clean the room.

No!

Instead, go for Winix 5500-2 Air Purifier or Bissell air320 Smart Air Purifier that is rated for 360 sq. ft. and 308 sq. ft. respectively. This way they can filter the air in the room super fast even when running at the lowest speed. And, they’ll make less noise while at it!

To get the best of these air purifiers, or any air purifier for that matter, I recommend running them with the windows closed. This way the wind doesn’t introduce fresh pollen and dust into the already cleaned area.
